1776 (1972)

IMDB rating: 6.90

Plot: The film version of the Broadway musical comedy of the same name. In the days leading up to July 4, 1776, Continental Congressmen John Adams and Benjamin Franklin coerce Thomas Jefferson into writing the Declaration of Independence as a delaying tactic as they try to persuade the American colonies to support a resolution on independence. As George Washington sends depressing messages describing one military disaster after another, the businessmen, landowners and slave holders in Congress all stand in the way of the Declaration, and a single “nay” vote will forever end the question of independence. Large portions of spoken and sung dialog are taken directly from the letters and memoirs of the actual participants.

ANSWER TO 1884 IS 1776?
WHAT DOES ALEX JONES MEAN BY THIS?

Are you sure you have the first date right? 1884 is important primarily for being a year of minor business depression in the United States.
Arbie | Feb 08, 2010

You probably mean 1984 by George Orwell. Big brother and all. Look it up or even better read it.

Your opinion on the dreaded Cliche?
These days it’s pretty much impossible to think of a completely new idea: The best authors can do, it would seem, is alter or modify an existing idea. The problem, however, is that it leads to cliches.

So what I want to know is, what do you think? Should authors avoid using cliches at all costs? Is it okay to use them if you twist them a different angle (for example, like what Disney did with the Princess and the Frog), or will it still seem boring and lifeless?

Another example is the traditional fantasy story where a child is born to an important figure but has to be hidden away. The child is not told of its parentage, and is usually given to a humble family of farmers or other similar callings. The child grows up, and is eventually told of its true parents. I was thinking of using this scenario in one of my stories, but of course with a twist. Do you think it shouldn’t be used at all? If not, how else could one lay claim to a throne or position if they are not entitled by birthright?

Thank you for your opinions, feel free to include any cliches that you truly despise, or any other advice.
Thanks for the spam. -_-
I love Terry Pratchett! :D

Also, I don’t mean a way they could aquire the "throne"; I mean a solid reason they would want it. I don’t want to go with the whole "I want power" scenario. Any other ideas?
Yay, no more spam. Thanks Yahoo Answers :D

It has been claimed — and I’m somewhat cynical about this — that there are only seven basic story lines in existence and that whatever we write is a variation on at least one or other of those themes. I think that cliches have their place in literature. The kind of people who enjoy a good romance are going to expect the basic theme of a girl meeting a boy and the two of them, after all kinds of mishaps and setbacks, ultimately finding bliss together and they’d feel decidedly disappointed if the whole thing ended in divorce.

There is the cliche you mention of the adopted child, but there are pitfalls — for example, if a child is legally adopted, then this has the effect of making him the heir of his adoptive parents and not his natural parents. He is therefore not in line to inherit the family fortune or title, neither can he inherit from his adoptive grandparents or through siblings and cousins of his adoptive parents under the laws of intestacy.

But we do get some intriguing stories in real life. Take that of Moses, for example — born to an oppressed people, saved from an otherwise certain death by his mother, adopted by an Egyptian princess and then nursed by his very own mother. His story is far more fascinating than any fiction I’ve ever read. There are also some more modern stories one comes across — take this one, for example. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/articl e-1217566/Jonathan-Aitken-daughter-disco vering-18-years-glorious-shock-lives.htm l , which tale has recently had a further twist. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/debate/column ists/article-1102908/Book-claims-Aitken- royal-blood.html

So your cliche could be made more interesting by the child concerned discovering his or her true parentage only for it to be revealed that the parents (or one of them) aren’t really the people they’ve always assumed they were. This could even come as good news if the plot concerned some supposed hereditary illness which need not be feared/endured any more.

I can’t believe somebody put some advertising stuff above….that ought to be banned.
Bez_606 | Feb 01, 2010

Avoiding something "at all costs" can lead to very stilted writing - sometimes the best way to say something is to use a cliche.

There are some authors who have used cliches very creatively - Terry Pratchett being one - so a cliche with a twist (incidentally that is also a cliche…) can be very interesting. I have just read "Quincunx" Charles Palliser, which is a literary treatment of Victorian writing cliches and it was amazing!

Not all claims run through birthright - the earliest societies would have leaders who prove themselves fit to lead - perhaps by killing or deposing the previous leader (obviously there are other ways of proving fitness that you could use - solving problems being one)
Vamp | Feb 01, 2010

cliches can ruin a good story or even a good movie moment. but just as they can ruin the moment, they can also make for some great parts. your right that they are evreywhere, but a lot of people like them. cliches can be used and most people dont mind as long there is something distinctive ( like a twist) make your story how you want, if you use a cliche, make it yours and its no longer a cliche

What should i do about my phobias?
I have phobias of murders, rapists, crazy people, being home alone, closing my eyes at night etc…

It’s not like— "Oh everyones afraid of those things, chill out"
Its worse for me.

+Before i go to sleep, i check all the rooms in the house to make sure no one is there.
+When i go to sleep at night i force myself to think about certain things. Like i stay awake until 3am making up a story in my mind so i dont start thinking about someone watching me sleep or something.
+Every little noise scares me
+I hate being alone. Even in the day time.
+My room is located downstairs while everyone elses is upstairs at the opposite end from mine. So im isolated.
+I CAN NOT sleep with the blinds of my room open.
+When i have to be home alone, i get a sharp knife ready and hold it by my side and watch tv on mute

I’ve tried a night light, but it’s not like im scared of monsters and the light will scare them off. A light wont scare someone entering my room at night with a knife.

I haven’t been to see doctors. My mum doesnt think its necesary, she thinks its all in my head. But its not!

Please help me! I can only go to sleep when someone sleeps with me, and i dont have many friends, so sleep overs are rare.

Im 14 years old. Female.

so it is all in ur head, but thats the problem…you mom is an idiot…you need to go to a psychiatrist. If it has been going on for over a week or two then it might get worse… untreated psycological issues usually do…and since this is affecting your sleep and int sounds pretty terrifying and you shouldnt have to live like that…since ur mom sucks, sorry to say that about ur mom but in this instance she sucks, you should tell ur school nurse and counselor what is going on…. they will probably call your mom and make her take u to a dr and they can probably offer some good advice and help…

hope you feel better soon, sorry for your troubles

i can understand, what you must be going through..relax,you neednt get to a doc or anything….you can help yourself..why not try that out??usually, everybody goes through different fears especialy at early stages of life…i would suggest you follow different methods to get rid of your problems..i can actually help you,but the most important you have to help yourself..first,those fears you mentioned are obviously not inbuilt..they are acquired..you didnt mention to me if you have siblings or not..i tell you, first REALISE..do not try to avoid thinking about it.there would be many people who tell you not to think of them.i tell you dont do that.realise your fears first so that you can work on them..list all your fears out,one by one..now you are going to go out in open and do some breathing.as you inhale, slowly think of your problems…digest them.dont take them.you need tpo have some patience to do this..now,slowly exhale.and when you do that,do the removal part..like you should be able to remove the fears one after the other..you can do that.its not magic..slowly try to remove them out.dont think its supernatural.you can do that..in a month, you will have your feras gone.trust me,iam not exagerrating..

Fantasia/2000 (1999)

IMDB rating: 7.20

Plot: In this update of Disney’s masterpiece film mixture of animation and music, new interpretations of great works of music are presented. It begins with an abstract battle of light and darkness set to the music of Beethoveen’s Fifth Symphony. Then we see the adventures of a Humpback Whale calf and his pod set to “The Pines of Rome.” Next is the humourous story of several lives in 1930’s New York City, scored with “Rhapsody in Blue.” Following is a musical telling of the fairy tale, “The Steadfast Tin Soldier” set to Dmitri Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto No. 2. Then a goofy Flamingo causes havoc in his flock with his yo-yo to the tune of the finale of “Carnival of the Animals.” This is followed by the classic sequence from the original film, “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” starring Mickey Mouse and followed by “Pomp and Circumstance” starring Donald Duck as a harried assistant to Noah on his Ark. Finally, we see the awesome tale of the life, death and renewal of a forest in a sequence featuring the composition, “The Firebird.”

Do you think "Fantasia 2000" will ever be re-released in IMAX or regular theaters?
I never got to see it in a theater, but I think it was only released in IMAX when it came out. It would be amazing to see it in an IMAX theater since I never got to see it in an IMAX theater. Sometimes movies do get re-released in theaters, and I just wondered if any of you knew if it might, could, or will in the future be re-released. It is an amazing film!

I’m glad to see that other people love that movie too! The segment with the fairy and the elk moves me to tears every time I see it. It looks like it was inspired by the Mt. St Helens eruption that was so devastating. It would be so incredible to see at an IMAX theater!

WENDYCAT | Jul 11, 2009

Gah, I wish it would. Highly doubt it though=/
Once… | Jul 11, 2009

No chance. More and more movies are being released as IMAX films so the theaters aren’t going to waste time with old movies when there are higher grossing IMAX movies to show (ie Star Trek, Transformers, Harry Potter).

What was the day like when you "knew and began" (your spiritual journey)?
The Journey

One day you finally knew
what you had to do, and began,
though the voices around you
kept shouting
their bad advice–
though the whole house
began to tremble
and you felt the old tug
at your ankles.
"Mend my life!"
each voice cried.
But you didn’t stop.
You knew what you had to do,
though the wind pried
with its stiff fingers
at the very foundations,
though their melancholy
was terrible.
It was already late
enough, and a wild night,
and the road full of fallen
branches and stones.
But little by little,
as you left their voices behind,
the stars began to burn
through the sheets of clouds,
and there was a new voice
which you slowly
recognized as your own,
that kept you company
as you strode deeper and deeper
into the world,
determined to do
the only thing you could do–
determined to save
the only life you could save.

Do you think fans (like me) of Transformers 2 are "mindless"?
I for one am a fan of TF2 and think it was a great movie. But critics and people who disliked the movie are stating, (very bluntly) that fans of this movie are mindless. What I want to do is let you get a glimpse into the reasoning of a "mindless" person like me so you can see why we enjoyed this movie. I’m not going to stress the special effects and action. Though these aspects of the movie were great and added to the overall enjoyment of the film, I want to talk about the main issues such as the plot, story, humor, and depth.
First and for most the story is your classic good vs evil story. But the main core of the story is that its is about a boy who is now grown up, facing the world and its responsibility, embarks on a quest to redeem himself by saving his friend who sacrificed himself to protect him. Why did his friend pay the ultimate price? Because Sam refused to provide aid for his friend when it was most needed. Its a quest of redemption. And Sam redeemed himself by paying the ultimate sacrifice to save his friend and was rewarded for his sacrifice. Sam was revived and brought back Optimus. There are many stories about sacrificing everything for redemption and in the end have everything work out.
Another enjoyable aspect of the film was how Sam and co. traveled to different locations and met different characters on his quest. The movie never had one particular setting which made it more interesting. They could have easily kept the movie in the city. The plot evolved and changed through out the movie and took you to different places that you could never pin point where the climax of the film might end up. At times even how it might end up. I think Jet fire is now my favorite. He was that old grumpy guy who is losing his mind a little bit but still has great knowledge that was extremely valuable toward Sam and co.’s journey. The Fallen who was at the beginning sort of the shadowy figure whom you weren’t really sure what his place was (other than being one of the main bad guys) till later on in the movie was great. You had Megatron who was back to seek vengence on those who destroyed them. Bumble bee whose main drive in the movie is to still protect Sam. Optimus Prime who symbolizes virtue and courage also sacrificed his life to save his friend even though the survival of his species could have been ensured by simply giving up Sam to the evil Megatron. The story of the movie yes maybe too complex but there is nothing mindless about it. Its just rushed and at certain parts of the movie is when the whole picture is put together. As far as humor yes I do agree that some of the humor was not needed and some of the crudeness should have been left out. As far as the twins, Bay wanted their personalities to be "gangsta wannabe". There is nothing racist about that. A lot of gangster wannabees regardless of race talk in some form of style similar to the twins. Its almost a staple dialogue for gangster wannabees. Even the voice actor for mudflap, Reno Wilson who is black, never saw them as remotely racist and claims that the way they talk was part of his idea. Bay just wanted gangster wannabees. The core value of the Twins for this movie was to be the bumbling comic relief similar to Artoo and 3PO. Kids loved the twins because they were funny and just acted like big kids themselves.
The core to me of the movie is redemption and putting everything on the line to save your friend and or loved one. On the way I was taken on an adventure that spanned the globe and was given many aspects of what an adventure is into one movie. In the end I was satisfied with the end result. If I am mindless for enjoying this movie than so be it. Can’t wait for round 3!

Okay I didn’t get past the first sentence. I’m a transformers fan 2 btw. And I don’t think you yourself can be mindless since you just wrote an entire essay on yahoo answers.
I do agree with answer #2, your only mindless if your one of the guys who watch the movie just because Megan Fox is in it. Those being the same people who saw Jennifers Body and actually think it’s a horror…

| Nov 05, 2009

You’re only mindless if you like Transformers because of Megan ‘awful actress’ Fox. You’re also mindless and/or a teenaged girl if you love the Twilight films.
S050683 | Nov 05, 2009

No, fans of Transformers just like to relax and watch an entertaining action flick with decent performances and some nice eye candy. The effects are great. But you can’t deny the weakness of the plot….
Scar Jokes | Nov 05, 2009

the movie is mindless because it is all explosions, CGI, and megan fox running. people call fans mindless because it doesn’t require a mind to enjoy it.
NEDM404 | Nov 05, 2009

I think people who think the first one was great are mindless.

It was 99% human story and 1% (or so) about transformers fighting (we didnt go see this movie to watch two idiot kids hit puberty)

2nd one was about transformers fighting and very little human story
